Sustainability assessment of corn production in conventional and conservation tillage systems

چکیده
To develop sustainable cropping systems, the coherence between economic, environmental, and energy aspects must be considered. We aimed to assess sustainability of corn (Zea mays) production using four tillage systems which varied in intensity soil disturbance (i.e., conventional till with moldboard plow (MP), chisel (CP), strip-tillage (ST), no-till (NT)) by performing life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA). It is common that material wastage not considered studies. When wastes are calculated monetary terms, hidden costs will revealed. Simultaneous application LCA MFCA methods assessments can provide such valuable information. Cradle-to-farm gate was as system boundary LCA-MFCA. The total annual input for MP, CP, ST, NT found 37472 MJ ha?1 (3092 t?1), 36384 (3290 33717 (3309 32889 (2764 respectively. Corn production and plant characteristics response to N fertilization management in dry-land conventional tillage system
Nitrogen (N) application management needs to be refined for low yielding environments under dryland conditions. This 3-yr study examined nitrogen fertilization management effects on corn (Zea mays L.) plant characteristics and grain yield in rain fed environment under conventional tillage system. Nitrogen fertilization management consisted of two timing methods of N application [all N at planti...
متن کاملthe effect of conventional and conservation tillage on forage corn yield in a barley-corn rotation
high intensity evaporation from the soil surface due to low air humidity and poor soil structure and organic matter are constraints of agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions of iran. regionally, maintaining plant residue with tillage management is one method to improve these conditions. in this study, for a barley-corn rotation, four barley residue management methods for standing stubble (bu...
متن کاملConservation Tillage Systems for Corn Production on a Loessial Silt Loam and Alluvial Clay in Louisiana
Corn acreage has increased in recent years in Louisiana. Much of this is on mixed to heavy Mississippi River alluvial soils and to a lesser extent on loessial silt loams of the Macon Ridge. Each of these soil groups are unique in their phys ical and chemical characteristics and different management strategies may be required to produce optimal yield. Research has indicated that corn performs b...

The effects of no-tillage (NT), conventional tillage (CT), and crop rotation on soybean yield and population dynamics of Heterodera glycines were compared during a 7-year study in a silty clay loam soil with 6% organic matter. Either H. glycines-resistant 'Linford' soybean or susceptible 'Williams 82' soybean was rotated with corn and grown on 76-cm-wide rows in both tillage systems. Soybean wa...
متن کاملConservation Tillage Corn and Forage Crops
Several reduced, or conservation tillage (CT) approaches are currently being evaluated in Central Valley forage production systems. In theory, these practices reduce costs and minimize the time needed to go from one crop to the next. Recent single-year trials with dairy forage producers in Stanislaus and Tulare Counties have evaluated the potential of several CT systems and have identified a nu...
